New Tehri: Best weekend getaways from Dehradun
If we were to tell you that New Tehri is one of the best weekend getaways from Dehradun, I don’t think you would believe us. So, we are here to share our experiences with you.
For the Blue Bullet Tribe, New Tehri has become like a second home. We make it a point to visit each year and every visit has something new to offer.
This year we decided to visit the town along with our three gals….Sakura, Nora, and Jojo.
Yes, so there were 5 beings on the blue bullet. If you are wondering, by “Gals” I mean cats. They are all very adorable.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, things were not certain and we were a bit worried regarding the permissions to travel and availability of accommodation. We decided to give it a shot and head out anyway.
Needless to say, the bike was overloaded with 2 humans and three cats. We managed to tie a saddlebag to the bike.
If you are traveling to New Tehri from Dehradun, you can choose amongst three routes, which are described in detail in this post.
As soon as we left the borders of Dehradun, we were stopped by the police.
Well, there was nothing to worry and they were very supportive. Cheers to Uttarakhand Police! We had to register ourselves and then were allowed to go on our way.
The weight of the bike and the sheer luggage made the ride very challenging, but the mesmerizing beauty of the route was comforting.
As we ascended up the steep Shivalik range, the journey was far from over, and little did we know what all adventures lie ahead.
Soon after we had booked the hotel, some people we met along the way warned us not to go ahead as a wild bull was on the loose and heading for anyone coming it’s way.
Tentatively, we moved ahead to find the bull heading straight for us. The bull seemed mad and was puffing wildly with villagers chasing it away.
We had to climb a rock to save our lives.
So after all this madness, we decided to stop for lunch. We like to eat home-cooked food as much as we can and so, we had packed lunch with us. We sat on a ridge overlooking the glorious Himalayas and clear blue skies.
Now since the route was narrow and roads not properly built, it took us almost three hours to complete a 72 km journey before we finally reached Kaddukhal, and prayed to Surkanda Devi for a safe and happy trip.
Once we hit the tarmac roads, we cruised alongside a view of snowy peaks of the mighty Himalayas to reach the New Tehri in about an hour.
The next two days were spent enjoying the fine weather, chilling, eating out, eating in, trekking, having tea, visiting the market, the details of which I will not bore you with.
So, if you going on a road trip from Dehradun to New Tehri, you have a choice of three routes.
There are three routes to reach Tehri.
Route 1 via Dehradun-Rishikesh-Chamba-New Tehri,
Route 2 via Dehradun-Maldevta-Kaddukhal-New Tehri,
Route 3 via Dehradun-Dhanolti-Kanatal-New Tehri,
The Blue Bullet Tribe has made its way through all three routes and our personal favorite is via Mussoorie, which I will detail below, but first, let’s get a quick picture of all these three routes.
This is the shortest route to New Tehri from Dehradun.
This route is almost 110 km and takes approximately 4 hours if you are not in a hurry. The roads are well built and you will be able to enjoy wide roads and a great driving experience.
If you are riding on heavier bikes, this would be ideal for you.
If you are taking this route, you must visit Mata Mann Ichchha Devi Temple, which is an ancient shrine and has a 500-year-old history.
Along the way, you will pass through other hill stations of Uttarakhand like Narendra Nagar and Agrakhal.
There you can enjoy pahadi delicacies, especially Bhutwa, which is the soupy goodness of lamb and goat intestines.
I highly recommend this route for families and large groups.
To take this route, you need to head to Raipur and ride or drive towards Maldevta. A little bit of help from the locals shall put you in the right way.
Don’t worry Google Maps work just fine too.
Once you pass the Maldevta Bridge, you will find yourself in a place you only see in movies and these spots are best for your Instagram feeds or Facebook live. Perfect sunlight, flowing stream dissecting the mountains!
Though you should prepare for a long journey while your butt cries for help!
The roads are narrow and not that well built. If you do not pay attention, you will feel the bumps along the ride. On the brighter side, beautiful villages and mesmerizing sceneries are guaranteed.
At the end of the road, you will reach Kaddukhal near Surkanda Devi Mandir and this route is the one that connects Mussoorie to Chamba.
This route is only for those that love adventure and enjoy the journey more than the destination. So choose wisely.
Deodar trees, chilled weather, you want to feel like hugging the sun, mountain views so compelling that you feel like settling down there with the love of your life.
Beware, this route is breathtaking and you will only cover approx. 72 km in 3 hours depending on the number of times you are stopping in between to take a quick selfie or Facebook live to tease your friends who canceled on you for the trip.
You deserved this!!
You will get plenty of options to eat as well.
Along the way, you will pass through beautiful places such as Dhanaulti and Kanatal where you can find accommodation if you cannot resist the temptation.
Yes! It is that gorgeous.
You can also visit Eco-Park at Dhanaulti.
Surkanda Devi is another tourist spot near New Tehri and it is the highest peak in the region, do not miss the view, and good luck with the trek.
